Crop Over Festival

If you’re lucky enough to be on Barbados this July and early August, make sure you check out the various Crop Over celebrations taking place across the island.

As its name suggests, Crop Over is an annual festival that dates back to 1687 celebrating the end of the sugar cane harvest. Today, it’s a celebration of the culture and history of the island in the form of music, dance, food and arts.

There are lots of events on this year’s Crop Over Calendar but stand out events include:

July 9 – August 3 – The Crop Over Visual Arts Exhibit
Free art exhibit at the Central Bank of Barbados, open daily from 10 am to 6 pm and featuring some of the island’s best artists and crafters. Some of the work is for sale.

August 1- Panache
This is a prestigious, all-inclusive event at the Holders Polo Field with live music, Prosecco bar and seafood and carving stations.

August 5 – Grand Kadooment
The final big event takes place on August 5 with Grand Kadooment Day – and it’s quite the carnival experience. Masquerade bands with over 15,000 dancers dressed in sequined costumes, colourful feathers and jewelled headdresses dance behind music trucks and moving bars.

The parade starts at the National Stadium at 8am and pulsates to the soca/calypso beats through the streets to the Spring Garden Highway and on to the Frank Worrell Roundabout.

It’s great fun to watch but we suggest you join in with the dancing and celebrate with the locals in true Barbados style.

Rum, Sun and Fun

You don’t have to be on Barbados for long to realise the importance of rum to the people, culture and economy of the island. Widely accepted as the birthplace of rum production over 300 years ago, Barbados now produces the best rum in the Caribbean.

Rum remains a major part of Bajan culture today. Drink it neat or over ice; mix it with soda or enjoy in one of the delicious cocktails available in the bars across the island.

Our signature rum cocktail here at the Beach Bar is Royal Rum Punch. It’s a mix of Mount Gay Eclipse Rum, simple syrup, fresh lime juice and orange juice, blended with ice and served in a long glass. It’s the perfect accompaniment as you watch the sun go down over the Caribbean Sea.

If you’d like to find out more about how it’s made, one of the most popular excursions for guests and owners is a visit to the Mount Gay Visitor Centre in Bridgetown.

Founded in 1703, Mount Gay is the oldest rum brand in the world. The 45-minute tour takes you through 300 years of rum-making history from sugarcane to bottle. You can then enjoy different varieties at the tasting session followed by a rum cocktail in the Mount Gay Bar and Lounge.

Prices start at just USD $50 for a signature rum tasting (transport included) to USD $125 for a full distillery experience with transportation in St Lucy. We particularly like the cocktail workshop (USD $70) and signature tasting with a Bajan buffet lunch for USD $75. The concierge team here can make all reservations for you.

The award-winning Foursquare Rum Distillery in St Philip offers a free self-guided tour followed by a rum tasting session (small charge). Known for brands like Doorly’s, Old Brigand and E.S.A. Field, the tour takes you through the various stages of rum making. Don’t forget to purchase your rum from the shop afterwards.

If you’re heading to the north of the island, drop into St Nicholas Abbey in St Peter. A rum tasting is included in the entrance fee.

For the ultimate rum experience, the Colony Club’s rum vault is a new event for the curious up to the connoisseur. Featuring 150 rums from across the world, guests enjoy a four-course meal with rum cocktail pairing and history on the development of rum in Barbados.

 Food and Rum Festival

So popular is rum on Barbados, islanders even have a festival for it. Taking place every October (so one for the diary), the Barbados Food and Rum Festival begins with a cook-off in Oistins, Christ Church.

The full schedule is yet to be announced, but there will be a food and rum pairing event, an afternoon of canapés and spirits at the polo field, fine dining experiences and, of course, a beach party.

This year, Tom Aikens, one of the UK’s most acclaimed and inspirational British chefs, will be taking part in the festival.
