A holiday to Barbados doesn’t have to break the bank, and while there is plenty of luxury to enjoy, a lot of the places and activities that the island has to offer are completely free!
Keep reading for our ten favourite ways to enjoy a day in Barbados without spending a fortune.
A walking tour of Bridgetown
Bridgetown is fairly easy to walk around, and there is plenty of history to take in. The city is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List and is one of the few places in the Caribbean that is.
There are of course paid tours you can take, with a guide to talk you through what you’re seeing, but you can save yourself a fine penny by just heading off on a self-guided wander instead.
There are maps available via apps such as GPS My City, which are a great way to take in the sights of the city.
Go for a hike
You may not expect it, but Barbados is a great place to go for a hike! You can take part in free organised hikes and get some exercise while taking in the wonders of the tropical forests and beautiful coastlines of the island. Find hike details here.
Sunbathe on the beach
A trip to Barbados wouldn’t be complete without at least a few solid days of sunning yourself on the beautiful beaches. All of the beaches are public and free, so you’ll have your pick of the island.
Work on your tan, enjoy the fresh sea
air, and enjoy the opportunity to just fully relax.
The crystal clear waters of the ocean are home to a great many different kinds of marine life, so why not bring your snorkelling gear and see for yourself?
With tropical fish, coral formations, and turtles to spot, there’s plenty to see. We recommend the calmer waters of the west coast.
Go celeb spotting
The west coast is home to lots of celebrity faces, many of whom own villas on the island. Keep your eyes peeled and you might just spot someone famous!
Swim with turtles
The turtle population of Barbados tend to be rather sociable and if you speak to the locals they can tell you where you’ll find them. Why not take a dip with these wonderful creatures?
Watch the sunset
This is something you’ll want to do lots of times during your stay because a Barbados sunset is truly spectacular. Each sunset is different, and the sea and horizon are bathed in colour. Barbados sunsets tend to be best viewed from the west coast and, if you’re lucky, you may even see some shooting stars!
Visit a national trust site
Okay so you can only do this one for free if you have a National Trust membership back home, but we wanted to include it because a lot of people don’t know that you can actually use your membership from the UK for free or reduced entry to many of the great historic sites on the island.
These include the wonderful Andromeda Botanic Gardens, and Arlington House Museum.
Track down the Barbados Murals
If you’re an art lover, you should definitely keep an eye out for the various colourful murals on the island.
Depicting the culture and history of the island, there are several to find, made from different mediums, and dotted around on various walls and buildings. Find out more about them here.
Visit Bathsheba Beach
For a stunning view of the island, we highly recommend making a trip to Bathsheba Beach while staying in Barbados.
A little off the beaten track, but well worth it to see the magnificent waves, and maybe snap some pictures! We don’t recommend going for a swim on this beach, however, as there are strong undercurrents and the sea is a little bit choppy.
These are just a few of the great things you can do completely free while you’re visiting Barbados, but we hope we’ve given you some inspiration. Want to enjoy the island like the locals
do? Then check out our post on how to live like a local while you’re in Barbados here.
