Royal Westmoreland Wins Top International Accolades at Property Awards

December 2015

Royal Westmoreland, Barbados, Wins Top International Accolades for Best Golf Development and Best Single Property

17th December 2015, London: Royal Westmoreland received two of the highest possible awards at the final stages of the International Property Awards 2015-2016; ‘Best Golf Development’ and ‘Best Single Property’. The awards were announced and presented at a glittering ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London on Monday 7thDecember 2015.

Having already won the regional Americas award for each category, Royal Westmoreland then competed with other regional winners from Asia Pacific, Africa, Arabia, the UK and Europe to be given the top International awards. Judging was undertaken by a panel of over 70 experts from all over the world and chaired by two active members of the House of Lords: Lord Caithness and Lord Best.

The award for ‘Best Single Property’ was for a home on the estate called ‘Idyll Moments’ which was designed by Gillespie & Steel Associates and project managed by the Royal Westmoreland Construction Director and his team. The striking 6,700sq.ft. villa commissioned by a British family, is built in a modern Caribbean architectural style with clean lines, slick interiors, large terraces and enormous expanses of glass to maximise the views. It has been one of the first villas on the estate to break away from the Caribbean vernacular.

The centrepiece of the estate is the impeccably designed golf course by renowned architect Robert Trent Jones Jr. The course offers stunning views of the Caribbean Sea from every green and utilises many natural features, including an old coral stone quarry on both the 5th and 6th holes.

Two distinct sets of nine holes make for a memorable round. The front nine, built on water table land, navigates through the tropical Barbadian landscape, whilst the back nine plays directly through the estate’s spectacular resort homes.

New to the golf estate this year and heading up the golf academy is veteran golfing legend Bill Longmuir. Bill hasplayed on the main European Tour, Senior European Tour and US Champions Tour, has had 14 career wins and led the British Open on two occasions. He has represented Great Britain in two PGA Cup Matches and the Rest of the World vs. America in the UBS Cup. Bill says: "The Royal Westmoreland course is widely regarded as one of the finest in the Caribbean, both technically for the accomplished golfer and aesthetically for the enthusiastic amateur.”

Since UK-based leisure entrepreneur John Morphet bought the estate in 2004, the course has been considerably improved. There are now plans to develop another 250 acres of land with a 9-hole golf course designed by Reece Jones (Robert Trent Jones Jr’s brother), a collection of residences on 31 lots and potentially also a hotel.

John Morphet says: "We have continued to invest in the facilities over the years, and are now building more contemporary homes to reflect modern tastes and it’s wonderful to see this being recognised by these top awards.”
