Concierge Recommends...St Nicholas Abbey

Royal Westmoreland’s elite concierge would like to recommend one of Barbados’ top tourist attractions for your next visit.

Legendary St Nicholas Abbey, in the northern parish of St Peter, is a fully restored 17th century sugar plantation house which now features a plethora of historical artefacts and antiques including a picture of Sir John Gay Alleyne, the gentleman behind the world-famous Mount Gay Rum.

Visitors will discover many fascinating tales of the bygone era during the tour and will get to watch a historic film, with footage dating as far back as 1935 painting a colourful and in-depth picture of the plantation’s past.

The biggest attraction of all is the exceptional rum distillery, which produces some of the Caribbean’s best rums. Guests can enjoy samples whilst learning about rum distilling, from cultivating and harvesting sugar cane, to the bottling and ageing process. Offering a more personal approach to rum tasting, connoisseurs will feel at home when sampling the different blends within the beautiful settings of this restored gem.
