Enjoy Crop Over Festival 2016 with Royal Westmoreland

The annual Crop Over Festival has long been the highlight of Barbados’ cultural calendar, as each year it reminds the world that there’s so much more to the island than palm trees and beaches.

Summer visitors are in luck this year, because celebrations will be running for longer than usual.

What’s Crop Over All About?

As its name suggests, Crop Over was established to mark the end of the year’s crop harvest (traditionally sugarcane), but over the years it has become a more general celebration of everything Barbados. For the festival’s duration, life on the island really is one big party for residents and visitors alike.

Celebrations Start Early in 2016

Crop Over usually begins in June but will commence slightly earlier this year – on Friday 20th May – as Briar Hall Playing Field hosts the Crop Over Mega Cavalcade. On Sunday 22nd, there will be a Crop Over Thanksgiving Service at the historic Sharon Moravian Church in Saint Thomas.

Soak Up the Barbadian Culture

As the festival runs for such a long time and hosts dozens of events in that timeframe, there is a big window of opportunity for summer visitors to get involved in the celebrations.

The calendar is packed throughout June and July, with a whole host of concerts, markets and other exciting events. The festival will officially end, as it does every year, on the famous Grand Kadooment Day – which is always the first Monday in August.

Grand Kadooment is a national holiday in Barbados, and this year it coincidentally falls on the very first day of the month. If there’s one Crop Over event you don’t want to miss, it’s this one – you’ll get to watch the huge carnival parade and get involved in the street parties. Expect plenty of elaborate costumes, the pulsing beat of calypso music and lots of traditional food and drink to treat yourself to.
